It is very important that we all — public and private sectors — use our combined best efforts to attract more convention business to the region.

The average convention attendee leaves behind almost $1,000 in St. Louis — money spent on lodging, food, transportation, entertainment, shopping, and a wide variety of services. This spending means jobs for area residents.

That’s why I have asked the CVC to tell me its hottest targets — those that a telephone call from an enthusiastic Mayor might tip in our direction. And that’s why I recently called Linda Raynes, CEO of the Electrical Apparatus Association.

It worked.

The EAA plans to bring more than 3,000 of its members to America’s Center in June 2009 for its annual meeting. They selected St. Louis over New Orleans.

Great choice.
