Last year, Wal-Mart began recruiting active duty and reserve military officers looking for new civilian careers to serve as retail executives. According to its website, Wal-Mart found 150 young men and women who subsequently underwent specialized management training and will enter the company as finance, operations, and merchandising managers across the country.

That is a very smart program. International events have built up a diverse and talented pool of proven leaders — officers and NCOs — are now looking for new careers and places to settle down and raise families. Our City government has often looked to the military for its senior employees. A young veteran serves as an aide to me; a talented former military engineer is the deputy director of the development agency. Local companies should look at this program.
