Last year, Wal-Mart began recruiting active duty and reserve military officers looking for new civilian careers to serve as retail executives. According to its website, Wal-Mart found 150 young men and women who subsequently underwent specialized management training and will enter the company as finance, operations, and merchandising managers across the country.
That is a very smart program. International events have built up a diverse and talented pool of proven leaders officers and NCOs are now looking for new careers and places to settle down and raise families. Our City government has often looked to the military for its senior employees. A young veteran serves as an aide to me; a talented former military engineer is the deputy director of the development agency. Local companies should look at this program.
