The St. Louis Veterans Day Parade will be held downtown at noon on Saturday, November 8, 2008. The parade will begin at Olive and 14th Street and end at Union Station, after marches along Olive, Chestnut, Tucker, and Market. There will be some temporary street closures before and during the parade.
The annual St. Louis parade is the highest profile observance in the region and it usually draws thousands of participants, most of them veterans and military personnel. However, it has not been a very well-attended parade for a while and that is a civic shame. Some years, severe weather dampens or chills turn-out. This year, though, temperatures are predicted to be seasonably moderate and only brief showers are expected.
The Veterans Parade is not about anybody’s politics. It is not about pressing matters of war or peace. It is a couple of hours once a year during which we acknowledge our neighbors who have already served bravely and sacrificed much for the country.
I strongly urge you to attend this year’s parade, rain or shine.
