Robbyn Wahby has sent me a note that the State Board of Education has approved the applications of two new charter schools in the City of St. Louis. The organizers of both schools — Gateway Science Academy and Carondelet Leadership Academy — had responded to a national Request For Proposals I issued; both had received my endorsement.

The schools will open in August 2010.

Carondelet Leadership is sponsored by Missouri Baptist University and operated by American Quality Schools. It will open as a neighborhood K-5 public charter school in the old Sts. Mary & Joseph school at Minnesota and Holly Hills. It will grow into a K-8 school.

Gateway Science is sponsored by Lindenwood University and operated by Concept. It will be a 6-12 public charter school focused on science, math, and technology. It is still finalizing its location.

So far, the State Board has approved four new charters that have gone through my vetting process. These are all great choices for City parents and their kids.
