Chancellor Zelema Harris is one of St. Louis’s quiet heroes. With little notice, she has re-shaped the St. Louis Community Colleges system into a relevant and indispensible part of the region’s efforts to train a local workforce ready to staff the sorts of contemporary companies that are inventing, testing, servicing, and manufacturing here. I read in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today that the community colleges’ budgets might require cutting back affordable daycare offered to the children of some the colleges’ students.

If there is a company in the St. Louis region counting on Chancellor Harris to prepare the sorts of hardworking and ambitious students who juggle children and classes as its next employees, please call her and see what a relatively small amount of financial assistance could do to keep the daycare doors open.
