I recently spent a day in Washington, DC, talking to mayors from across the country about strategies for making our cities safer. We agreed that an important step in that effort is to crack down on criminals who possess, use, buy, or sell illegal guns. Common sense, right?
Apparently, that good sense is not apparent to some Missouri legislators. Several members are supporting bills this session that would prevent St. Louis - and other municipalities - from enforcing local ordinances against carrying unconcealed guns and firing them.
I am not a member of the Police Department’s new Crime Suppression Unit, a group formed a couple of weeks ago to target the most brazen and persistent criminals in the City’s most dangerous neighborhoods. But if I were, I would wonder why some legislators were trying to make my tough job even more dangerous than it already is.
