A reporter asked me to comment on a rumor he’d heard (or, likely, read on a website) that the Police Department was considering reducing the overall number of police officers in order to give payraises to the remaining officers.
I had not heard the rumor.
If there were a proposal to to reduce the number of officers on the streets or in our neighborhoods, I would oppose it.
Keeping our neighborhoods safe is one of the City’s most important jobs. In fact, this year’s budget includes an extra $1 million to preserve the violent crime task force and to maintain our neighborhood patrols.
