Urban Roots has just finished planting Downtown. If you haven’t been Downtown yet this month, you should visit.

The Urban Roots group — a partnership of volunteers and staffers from Operation Brightside, the Flora Conservancy, the Downtown St. Louis Partnership, Gateway Greening, the City’s Parks Department, and St. Louis Master Gardeners — is in its third year of beautifying Downtown with flowers.

In their first year, the volunteers splashed colors in unexpected places around Downtown. Last year, they added spectacular window boxes to City Hall, and began placing and filling planters in Kiener Plaza.

This year’s display promises to be the best yet, with median plantings on Tucker and Market, plantings on City Hall grounds, at the Serra Sculpture, at Kiener Plaza, and in hanging baskets throughout Downtown.

I know that gardens are not planted by sitting in the shade — so, I thank the U Roots for their hard, successful efforts.
