St. Louisans should thank Congressman Lacy Clay for his role in the US House of Representative’s passage of the COPS Reauthorization Act of 2007. By Lacy’s estimate, H.R. 1700 — if it becomes law — will put 50,000 police officers back on the streets across America, including an additional 957 police officers in Missouri, over the next six years.
Passage of this legislation is one of the City’s top priorities in Washington, DC, this session. It has been endorsed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriffs Association, the Fraternal Order of Police, the National Association of Police Organizations, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, and the National League of Cities.
The bill still must be approved by the Senate and signed by the president. They should do so quickly.
