Starting this weekend, MoDOT is going to rebuild the Kingshighway Bridge over Clayton Avenue. This will mean some changes in the way we drive across the City. The area that we expect to be most impacted is bound by I-44 on the south, Forest Park Parkway on the north, McCausland on the west, and Grand on the east.

We have been preparing for this construction project for quite some time, but there is probably going to be heavy traffic congestion during the first week as we all get used to doing things a different way.

To help you, the City and the state will begin the project by having teams of people in the field to help keep traffic moving. And these teams will be able to change traffic patterns, if they need to.

Here are a few general recommendations:

  • Relax a little. This is not permanent.

  • If you can, use alternatives to Kingshighway during the morning and afternoon rush hours. Getting onto westbound I-64 during the afternoon rush will be particularly problematic. Avoid that if you can.

  • Pay attention to media traffic reports, both live and on their web sites.

  • Study alternative routes. There are other ways to get where you need to go, and you’ll get the chance to see some new City neighborhoods. Give yourself a little more time to get there.

  • If you are involved in an accident, please move your car out of the traffic lanes if at all possible. It is OK to do so under the law.

  • Consider sharing rides (misery loves company, right?) and taking public transportation.
  •
