For the last several years, some state legislators have sought to bar state and local government agencies from offering important public notices and instructions in languages other than the state’s common language. While the idea of “English-Only” may strike a chord in some homogenous communities, it makes much less sense in diverse communities whose different populations speak English on a limited basis or are more comfortable in other languages.

Although the worst of this unnecessary and potentially dangerous legislation has died in the General Assembly, some did not. HJR 7, which would make English the language for all official proceedings in Missouri, passed on the final day of the legislative session and could be before voters in the general election in 2008.
