AT&T has announced that it will be phasing out its payphones over the next year.
I don’t have a problem with the decision. City merchants don’t really like payphones; neighborhood associations frequently complain about them.
Smaller independent vendors will take over the operation of some of the current AT&T payphones in Missouri; others will be removed and not replaced. With the ubiquity of cell phones (there are 250 million cell phones in use across the country today; only 1 million payphones), customers have already been hanging up on payphones for years.
