I don’t understand why Missourians allow the mechanics of our elections to be so tied up with politics. Although it makes some sense that the citizens serving as volunteer overseers of the voting process be selected with an eye to their prior partisan history, it makes much less sense to vet the professional staffers at headquarters based upon their histories of identifiable partisan involvement. I believe that elections could be run more efficiently and fairly if state law allowed Election Boards to select professional managers and skilled technicians — regardless of party — to do the mechanical tasks of selecting polling places, managing data bases, handling budgets, evaluating voting machine technologies, and recruiting and training Election Day workers.

This shouldn’t even be controversial — but, it probably will be.
