A sentence at the bottom of an article in the local daily newspaper reads:
Although the majority of the area’s homeless are concentrated downtown, Slay wants more help from other regional governments.
It’s funny the difference a carelessly chosen word makes. A better journalist or a thoughtful editor might have used the word “because,” instead of “although.”
It is, in fact, true that I have encouraged St. Louis County and its many municipalities to expand on their under-funded - or non-existent - homeless services programs. I have done so because the current situation - in which most of the services required by homeless people are downtown - serves to draw homeless people downtown from throughout the region.
