Because of my obvious interest in information technology, I have been receiving updates on efforts to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of City service delivery using such technology. Federal grants are allowing various City agencies to test new technologies in a variety of applications. Bureaucracies of paper and creaking mainframes are slowly giving way to 21st Century business practices and tech gear.

One project that I am watching now involves a coordinated effort by Planning & Design Agency staffers, IT wizards, and the St. Louis Development Corp. staff to migrate various City data bases to servers that can be accessed “in the field” by City inspectors and development staff.

I’ll keep you updated on the most successful applications.
