Participants in National Night Out — a partnership of neighbors, City officials, and the police department — will be gathering at dozens of places around the City tonight to heighten awareness about crime and anti-crime programs, and to enjoy each others’ company.

I’ll be at several of them myself, starting with one in Hyde Park at 6 pm.

At every stop tonight, I’ll tell the Night Out neighbors that all their hard work to build close-knit, vigilant blocks and their continuing faith in the City’s future are paying off: property values are up almost everywhere, the City’s population is growing, long-neglected neighborhoods are seeing new investment, and — at least for the year to date — most types of crime are down in most City neighborhoods.

I hope I see you, too.
