We’ve all been waiting for Ted Koplar to keep his promise to return Maryland Plaza to its rightful place as the retail anchor of one of the City’s most vibrant neighborhoods. This week’s low-key announcement that Design Within Reach (DWR) will open its only store in the region in a sharply refurbished Maryland Plaza - and the completion of much of the new public infrastructure (including a new fountain) there - are excellent starts on Ted’s pledge.

For those of you unfamiliar with it, DWR sells well-designed modern furniture - and hefty and not-so-hefty prices. It is an edgier, more urban version of Pottery Barn. The nearest DWR studio right now is in Chicago.

Much of the credit for Maryland Plaza’s likely revival belongs to Ted’s son Sam Koplar, who has recently joined the family business with fresh eyes and strong enthusiasms.

Doors will open in Maryland Plaza next year.
