Two weeks, a thousand floats, 500 marching bands, 135,000 paraders, and many more watchers. That’s Mardi Gras in New Orleans in normal times.
These, of course, are not normal times.
I expect some of the people who have celebrated the start of Lent in the Crescent City will, instead, be in Soulard and Downtown in 2006 as part of the nation’s “second largest Mardi Gras” party.
We’ll consider the new visitors an unexpected loan from a Sister City — and we will be ready to welcome them.
Staffers from the CVC and the Celebration Center have already begun working with volunteer groups and public safety groups to make our Mardi Gras bigger, better, and safer than it ever has been.
