The City has recently closed several encampments because they were unsafe, unsanitary, and inhumane. Larry Rice has proposed to open a new one. Facilities of the type proposed by Rev. Rice must comply with health, safety, sanitation, and zoning requirements - and he knows that. He also knows this: the Department of Public Safety will work with the Department of Health, Department of Human Services, and the Police Department to clear any unlawfully established encampment in the City.
A better way to help combat homelessness is to contribute to the United Way of Greater St. Louis - Encampment Relocation Fund. That money will help the former residents of the riverfront encampments.
