It is not easy starting up a small business. Ask anyone who has ever tried. Problems often outstrip ideas; bills outnumber customers.

That’s one reason the City has partnered with St. Louis county to create the Enterprise Centers — affordable, flexible office and warehouse space that allows new businesses to start up with shared costs and some good management counseling. Armed with these early advantages, nearly 70 percent of Enterprise Center alums go on to make successes of their businesses.

Earlier this year, two St. Louis companies graduated from the Midtown Enterprise Center incubator near Grand Center: BRK Electrical Contractors and McDermott Enterprises, makers of Great Scot! biscotti. And several new businesses have been approved for location in the incubator. These include: DB Cookie Factory; Gonzalez Companies LLC, a construction services and engineering firm; and Two Weasels Press LLC, publishers of Playback: stl, a monthly music and entertainment e-mag.
