Springfield (IL) Mayor Tim Davlin has a green thumb. He has made the beautification of Springfield’s downtown one his administration’s priorities. Springfield is planting trees and flowers throughout its business district.

On a recent visit to St. Louis, Mayor Davlin noticed the flowers and trees along Market Street and in its medians and wanted to know how we did it. So, he asked his guy to call our guy — and the guys talked among themselves. Now, Springfield planners are talking about “St. Louis-style” irrigation and planting systems . . . If you make it to Springfield for the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum, the streets around it might look familiar.

When Charlie Brennan and the Gateway Greening folks said that flowers were an important way to win new friends for our City, they were right.
