An animal rights group is displaying an elephant statue in a downtown City park while the circus is in town. As I told a representative of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, I don’t know why the permit was denied in the first place. I am glad that a vexing non-issue has been successfully resolved — by lawyers and, apparently, by common sense.

(On a more practical note: City Health department inspectors will be monitoring the health and treatment of the actual elephants when they visit St. Louis this month.)
