Don King, the promoter, was in town this afternoon. He is a character. And a Republican. (It’s difficult to imagine Trent Lott and Don King in the same organization.)

The Friday Night Fights which he was here to announce and publicize will provide entertainment for boxing fans, revenues to the City, and customers for restaurants, hotels, and stores near the Savvis Center.

St. Louis is no stranger to the Sweet Science. Our community has supported amateur boxing programs - such as the Golden Gloves, the City recreation boxing programs, the Police Athletic League, Guns & Hoses, and others. These programs have nurtured the careers of some of boxing’s greats and been part of the growing up experience of thousands of young St. Louisans.

We haven’t been a regular venue for major pro boxing events for a while. Today’s announcement by Don King and the Savvis Center will change that. They have promised a regular fight series and some championship bouts.

Boxing is now one more thing to do Downtown.
