The Home Builders Association seems to be a likely source for reliable information about home building. That’s a good reason to read “Builders News,” the HBA’s official publication.
According to a report in the current issue, the City’s housing industry is growing faster than any other housing industry in the region. Housing production for just the first 6 months of 2005 has already exceeded total 2004 housing production in critical categories.
In total, City permits have been issued for roughly 3,100 newly constructed and substantially rehabilitated housing units in the first six months of 2005 — the same number of units permitted for all of 2004.In January through July of 2005, 222 City permits for single-family construction were issued compared with 169 for all of 2004 a 31 percent increase. In January through July of 2005, 401 City permits for newly constructed multifamily units were issued compared with 371 for all of 2004 — a 10 percent increase. In January through July of 2005, 2,332 City permits for single-family construction were issued compared with 2,303 for all of 2004 a 1.3 percent increase.
By comparison, HBA figures for the remainder of the counties reported by Builder News show generally slower production. Housing production in Franklin and Lincoln Counties for the first six months of 2005 was below production for the first six months in 2004. Jefferson County and St. Louis County showed slight drops when comparing first six months 2004 to first six months 2005, while St. Charles County showed an approximately 5 percent increase for this time period.
