City Hall trivia (times 3):

There are 51 new flags — the US flag, 49 state flags, and the City of St. Louis flag — displayed in the City Hall Rotunda.

Why are there only 49 state flags? In 2001, I asked the facility managers to remove the flags of Mississippi and Georgia from the display after receiving numerous citizen comments about their design (both included representations of the Confederate Battle Flag). Georgia subsequently redesigned its flag and its replica was returned to the display; Mississippi did not.

Actually, the display now is more complete than it has been in decades: The flags of Nebraska, Tennessee, and Minnesota have been missing (stolen? borrowed? damaged?) since 2001 — and other flags have been away being repaired or cleaned.

The Saint Louis Ambassadors donated the original Rotunda of Flags display at City Hall. Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 562 has purchased and donated the new flags and poles.
