I have received a letter from Chief Sherman George. In the letter, the Chief agreed to start the promotional process that could fill dozens of vacant supervisory positions in the St. Louis Fire Department. The Chief also offered some good ideas on how to make future promotion tests better.
The City Charter explicitly places the responsibility for promotional testing with the Department of Personnel. But, as I promised, the Chief, Local 73 and FIRE will participate in creating new protocols for future tests.
As I have said many times this week, I support Chief George. I look forward to working with him to solve some of the issues raised by the controversy over promotions. It is my hope that years from now we will view today as the start of a new day in the St. Louis Fire Department.
