Macy’s, Inc., the international retailer that purchased St. Louis-based May Co. last year, is saying in the news today that its new acquisitions — hundreds of stores across the country — have not performed as well as they expected. They’re the experts in retail performance, so I assume they know what they are talking about.

I’m just a shopper, but I think that the downtown Macy’s store has far exceeded what I expected. The building is brighter, friendlier, busier, and better stocked today than it has been in about 20 years. Its managers and their bosses are doing a great job in the City — and they have become good partners in our citywide revitalization and good neighbors in the central business district.

(And, yes, I usually buy my suits at the downtown Macy’s.)
