3.24.020 Selection of officers.

The Chief of the Fire Department and the First Deputy and Second Deputy Chief, shall not be taken from the rank below the rank of battalion chief. When any vacancies take place in any grade of officers, they shall be filled from the next lowest grade, provided:

1. Privates shall serve at least five years as such before being promoted to the rank of lieutenant;

2. Lieutenants shall serve at least two years as such before being promoted to the rank of captain;

3. Captains shall serve at least three years as such before being promoted to the rank of battalion chief;

4. Battalion chiefs shall serve at least one year as such before being promoted to the rank of chief or first or second deputy chief;

5. In no case shall the Chief of the Fire Department, or the First and Second Deputy Chief, be selected from men who are not members of the Fire Department of the City or below the grade of battalion chief. (1948 C. Ch. 24 § 2: 1960 C. § 330.020.)
