An odd mention of our hometown in a Florida newspaper (The Ledger) caught MayorSlay.com’s eye this morning. Is the quoted "hot dog fan" accurately representing her St. Louis past - or pulling a gullible reporter’s leg?

Today, Independence Day, Americans will consume 150 million hot dogs, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. But you won’t catch everyone putting mustard, ketchup and relish inside their buns. Some readers have let freedom ring in tune with the holiday spirit by revealing their most cherished hot dog toppings . . .

In reply to a query in The Ledger, hot dog fans told us what their favorite wacky toppings were.

Michelle Daugherty finds that her friends cringe when they see her topping her dog with peanut butter and chili.

"As soon as I start making it they’re like, ’Awww, do you have to?’" Daugherty said.

In St. Louis, where Daugherty grew up, it was common practice to dip toasted peanut butter sandwiches into chili.
