Mayor Francis G. Slay presented the Mayor's Spirit of St. Louis Award today to SPACE LLC, an award-winning design-build firm that recently relocated to "The Grove" neighborhood.

The Mayor's Spirit of St. Louis Award recognizes businesses that make major expansions or improvements to their existing locations, open or relocate to the City, and certain major City projects.

SPACE was founded in 2005 by registered architect Tom Niemeier and relocated early this year from Maplewood to new offices in the City at 4168 Manchester. SPACE transformed a deteriorating building that had been vacant for over a decade into a 7,500-square-foot studio that illustrates their commitment to sustainable design and the use of innovative, alternative energy systems. The company provides a full range of architectural and design services with expertise in sustainable educational, healthcare corporate and hospital projects. In 2009, SPACE was voted Best Contemporary Architecture firm in the area by St. Louis Magazine and has won three prestigious American Institute of Architecture awards in the last three years.

The company's public/private financing package included assistance from the St. Louis Development Corporation (SLDC), the City's economic development agency, in the forms of revolving loan funds and a Small Business Association 504 loan for purchase and renovation costs, furniture and equipment.
