Statement of the St. Louis Public Safety Director Eddie Roth

"People deserve to live in homes, not tents. The City closed the riverfront encampments because they were unsafe, unsanitary, and inhumane. We will not allow another tent encampment to open. The type of facility Rev. Rice proposes must comply with applicable health, safety, sanitation, and zoning requirements. "St. Louis' Department of Public Safety will be working with the Department of Health, Department of Human Services, and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to immediately clear any unlawfully established encampment. "As always, we encourage people to financially contribute to the United Way of Greater St. Louis - Encampment Relocation Fund to help the former residents of the riverfront encampments. People seeking shelter and supportive services should call 211 and we will work to find them safe, supportive housing."
