Kara Bowlin explains the trash/recycling schedule - and changes to it caused by holidays and furloughs:

Due to observation of holidays and Citywide furlough days, residents will occasionally see changes to their trash and recycling collection schedule. All households in the City of St. Louis will continue to receive two solid waste collections per week - if recycling is currently implemented on a resident's block in either the form of blue alley containers or blue roll-out carts, Monday or Tuesday will be dedicated to collection of non-recyclable trash; either Thursday or Friday will be dedicated to collection of recyclables. If recycling is not yet implemented on a block, both days (Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday) will be dedicated to the collection of non-recyclable solid waste. During some weeks, additional collection day(s) may be added for yard waste (one collection per week in the growing months) and for bulk items (one collection per month).

The City of St. Louis Refuse Division's collection schedule changes during holiday weeks and weeks that contain a Citywide furlough. The holiday collection schedule is posted on the Refuse Division's website at http://stlouis-mo.gov/government/departments/street/refuse/documents/tra.... The Refuse Division encourages residents to save or bookmark the 2011 holiday collection schedule for quick reference.

The collection schedule will be adjusted to accommodate the City's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance on Monday, January 17, 2011.

* If residents' normal collection days are Monday and Thursday, solid waste collection will change to Tuesday and Thursday during the week of January 17th;

* If residents' normal collection days are Tuesday and Friday, solid waste collection will be changed to Wednesday and Friday.

Friday, February 11, 2011, is Lincoln's Birthday and a Citywide furlough day.

* If residents' normal collection days are Monday and Thursday, solid waste collection will change to Monday and Wednesday the week of January 17th;

* If residents' normal collection days are Tuesday and Friday, solid waste collection will be changed to Tuesday and Thursday.
