The City Streets Department has started to close and erect flood gates to keep the rising Mississippi River out of the City.
The current river stage forecast calls for a 39.5 crest on the Mississippi River at the City of St. Louis by Wednesday. In response, the Streets Department locked down four gates today between East Grand and Madison Street.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Friday, four more gates will be closed and flood gates erected at Poplar Street and at Carr Street along Lenore K. Sullivan Boulevard.
City crews will continue to shut gates throughout the weekend. The schedule will depend on forecast changes and the needs of businesses impacted by the rising river.
